Lightweight solution gives operators secure connectivity and multi-network access with minimal SWaP burden
Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”), a leader in mobile ad hoc network (MANET) technology, will be showcasing its brand-new Personal Transport 5 (PT5) device for the MPU5 handheld networking device for the first time at SOF Week, held May 5-8 in Tampa, Florida.
Recently pre-trialed by the U.S. Army, the compact PT5 enables dismounted troops equipped with the MPU5 to securely tap into host-nation 5G cellular infrastructure—providing access to global communications and cloud-based resources in denied or infrastructure-poor environments. Simultaneously, it allows users to create a personal area network (PAN) that wirelessly integrates third-party Wi-Fi-enabled devices such as laptops, cameras, and sensors. This dual capability enhances the tactical edge, enabling data-rich collaboration, mission planning, and sensor integration without requiring additional hardware or complex setup.
“In today’s contested and congested RF environments, relying on a single communications method is a risk the warfighter cannot afford,” said Mike Gold, VP of Business Capture – SOCOM. “With the PT5, we’re providing a lightweight, mission-adaptable solution that empowers users with encrypted PACE (Primary, Alternate, Contingency, Emergency) communications—whether through MANET, cellular, or SATCOM pathways. That flexibility is essential for maintaining connectivity and situational dominance in dynamic and unpredictable operational theaters.”
For the warfighter, the PT5 delivers a decisive advantage: seamless access to critical data and communications without relying solely on line-of-sight radio links or high-power infrastructure. Whether maneuvering through urban terrain, transitioning between mission phases, or operating in bandwidth-constrained environments, operators gain greater autonomy, resilience, and interoperability—reducing operational risk and enhancing mission success.
The PT5 allows third-party Wi-Fi devices to connect to the MPU5, eliminating cables and minimizing snag hazards in fast-moving tactical environments.
